A Smallpdf alternative: free, unlimited and with no file upload

Smallpdf is one of the best-known PDF sites, liked for its simple interface. Like most online services it works by upload: the file goes to its servers, is processed there, and you download the result. Its business model is a limited free plan plus a Pro subscription.

PDF PRO SAFE does the opposite: no server receives your files, and since processing happens on your device there is nothing to ration. Here is what that changes in practice.

Cloud or local: the 6 criteria that matter

Comparison between the cloud model of online PDF tools and PDF PRO SAFE's local model
CriterionCloud modelLocal model (PDF PRO SAFE)
Where files are processedCloud modelOn the provider's servers: the file is processed remotely.Local model (PDF PRO SAFE)In your browser, on your device, by WebAssembly and Web Workers.
Data transferCloud modelUpload of the file, then download of the result: two transfers per operation.Local model (PDF PRO SAFE)Zero bytes of the document transferred: it is read and written in memory, on the device.
PrivacyCloud modelA copy of the document stays stored for a while on third-party servers.Local model (PDF PRO SAFE)No copy at a third party: nothing to delete, nothing that can leak elsewhere.
GDPR complianceCloud modelRelies on the provider's policy and terms; the provider becomes a data processor as soon as the document contains personal data.Local model (PDF PRO SAFE)Privacy by design: no provider receives the document, so there is no processor to vet.
Usage limitsCloud modelQuotas and size limits on the free plan; a subscription lifts them.Local model (PDF PRO SAFE)100% free and unlimited, no account; only your device's memory sets the maximum size.
SpeedCloud modelDepends on your connection: upload and download time, then the server's queue.Local model (PDF PRO SAFE)No transfer: processing starts at once, in memory; how long it takes depends on your device.

What Smallpdf says about its limits and your files

  • Files uploaded for processing are deleted from its servers after one hour; you need to download them within that time.
  • Data is processed on servers located in the European Union, and the company states it is ISO 27001 certified.
  • With an account, stored files stay for as long as you want and are erased within an hour of your deletion request; transfers use 256-bit TLS encryption.
  • The free plan applies a daily download limit on several tools; the Pro subscription gives unlimited access.

A daily limit is a sensible business choice for a service that pays for servers on every file it processes. A local tool has no such cost: your device does the work, hence no quota.

The real cost of a daily limit

A daily download limit bites on exactly the busy days: a batch of invoices to merge, a job application to compress file by file, scans to convert. You wait until tomorrow, switch tools halfway through, or subscribe.

With PDF PRO SAFE the tenth file of the day is processed like the first. There is no counter, no account, and no feature kept for a paid plan.

When Smallpdf is still a good choice

If you want your documents on every device through online storage, need to send documents to several signers with tracking, or share a team workspace, Smallpdf offers those services, which PDF PRO SAFE does not aim at.

For everyday merging, compressing, converting, protecting or redacting, the local tool is enough, with no limit and no copy left anywhere else.

What about a large file?

An online service has to receive the file first: on a slow connection, uploading a PDF of several dozen MB takes time, and so does downloading the result. Locally, processing starts at once and depends only on your device. A recent computer compresses or merges most documents in seconds, but an old phone will be slower than a server at OCR on a long document.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Smallpdf alternative with no daily limit?

Yes. PDF PRO SAFE sets no quota: no maximum number of files per day, no account, no subscription. Since processing happens on your device, there is no server cost to limit.

Does Smallpdf keep my files?

According to Smallpdf, files processed with the free tools are deleted after one hour, and files stored in an account stay until you delete them. With PDF PRO SAFE the question does not arise: the file is never uploaded.

Does PDF PRO SAFE offer the same tools as Smallpdf?

The everyday operations, yes: merge, split, compress, convert to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint, protect, sign, OCR, redact. Online storage and tracked multi-party e-signature are not offered.
